Briefly explain your role

Line Manager for 18 security officers across two electronic component distribution centres. Assisting client operation management team in investigations for loss prevention and health and safety matters.

What do you love about your job?

Being able to step back from my team and observe them fulfilling their duties to KST standards. Hands on, face to face training with my team is most rewarding for me as I can bring out the best of my staff. Networking and bringing loss prevention investigations to a successful conclusion is also something I love about my job.

What made you decide to start a career in the security sector?

As a nipper that decided to come away from Army basic training, previous experiences at home inspired me to come to the security industry.

How does KGS support you in your role?

My line manager is there 24/7 should I need him, supplying all the tools and advice I need to do what I need to do. The lovely HR team are never far behind either.

Has there been any significant barriers to progression in your career within the security profession?

Absolutely no barriers here!

I have been given numerous opportunities to further my skill set including working away on projects with my manager. Training on and off site and it continues to this day.

How has your previous work experience prepared you for your role in security?

My previous work experiences (not all of them good!) has taught me to appreciate a great company and to embrace every hour on the job. It has also taught me how important a great relationship with the client is.
Having the right attitude to work is key to a happy work, home life balance. My attitude reflects heavily on my team.

What’s your most memorable moment in your career so far?

In my store detective days, I achieved 340 arrests in under 2 years and was given recognition for this.
Closely matched by having my own dog pass her dog handler training course and coming to work with me around the northeast of England.

What opportunities do you feel the security profession offers?

The security profession has already given me the opportunity I need and that is a brilliant work / home life balance. I put the time and effort in at work and my home life benefits from this.

What do you do at work on a daily basis?

Converse with all of my team and the client.
Walk away happy that I’ve done what is needed.

What advice would you give for someone new starting in the industry?

Keep a level head! It’s not about filling a jacket or a bum on a seat. You make the job what you want it to be, the right manager will find you and bring the best out of you. Having goals to aim for, away from work will drive you!
