Lorraine Lawton

Briefly explain your role

I provide a visual deterrent for the traders, which helps put their minds at ease knowing that my presence is known to potential thieves or those involved in antisocial behaviour.

What do you love about your job?

I previously worked in the hospitality sector and found my role rewarding because it enabled me to help customers by interacting with them and supporting them where possible. I also enjoyed the problem-solving aspects of that sector, which made me want to change career path into the security industry, namely retail security, where I can do more of what I enjoy.

What made you decide to start a career in the security sector?

I decided to start a career in the security sector because I enjoy helping people and maintaining a safe environment. I like working in roles that require responsibility, good communication and staying calm under pressure. The variety of situations and opportunities to develop professionally also make the security industry a rewarding career for me.

How does KGS support you in your role?

I have a very good manager who carries out regular welfare checks. They ask if there are any issues or concerns that can be addressed and actioned accordingly. Things get done, help is there when needed, and they are very understanding, which makes communication easy. I have been made very welcome and I work with a great team.

Has there been any significant barriers to progression in your career within the security profession?

No, I have not been in this sector very long. I am happy in the sector I am in because it is customer-focused, which I enjoy being part of. I do not think I would enjoy another security sector as much.

How has your previous work experience prepared you for your role in security?

Working in hospitality means you are customer-focused, always vigilant and prepared to de-escalate any situation that occurs.

What’s your most memorable moment in your career so far?

Being part of the ‘Courtyard Clash’ pro wrestling event and seeing how the children engaged and families came together. It was amazing.

What opportunities do you feel the security profession offers?

It offers a wide range of opportunities if you want to go down those routes, from door security to mobile security to events. The list is endless.

What do you do at work on a daily basis?

I carry out regular patrols of the market, check in on traders to make sure they have no concerns, and stay prepared to de-escalate situations when they occur.

What advice would you give for someone new starting in the industry?

Know your role, be prepared to ask if you are unsure, and work with your team. Communication is key.
