Kim Myers

Briefly explain your role

I oversee asset protection, inventory integrity and safety within large-scale distribution and e-commerce warehouses. I protect both company profit and colleagues by investigating theft, managing physical security systems and supporting workplace safety programmes.

What do you love about your job?

I love that my role offers a dynamic and rewarding blend of investigative work, strategic problem-solving and people leadership. Using real-time data, exception reporting and CCTV analytics, I investigate theft, fraud and process failures to identify root causes and reduce inventory shrinkage. At the same time, I play a critical role in protecting employees by implementing security measures, crisis management plans and workplace safety initiatives. With no two days the same, the position combines long-term security strategy with hands-on operational support, while partnering with Operations, HR, IT and external stakeholders to strengthen business resilience. The impact of my work is measurable through improved safety, reduced losses, optimised security systems and stronger operational performance.

What made you decide to start a career in the security sector?

Twenty-two years ago, I joined the security industry because I was looking for a career where I could make a real difference. As a woman entering what was
traditionally a male-dominated field, I saw an opportunity to challenge stereotypes, prove my capabilities and build a career based on integrity, resilience and
problem-solving.

What attracted me most was the variety of the role. Every day presented new challenges, from protecting people and assets to investigating incidents and finding practical solutions. I enjoyed the responsibility that came with keeping people safe and helping organisations operate securely and efficiently.

Over the years, my passion for security has only grown. The industry has evolved significantly, with advances in technology, data analytics and risk management providing continuous opportunities to learn and develop. Looking back, choosing a career in security was one of the best decisions I made, and I remain motivated by the opportunity to lead teams, improve security outcomes and create safer workplaces for everyone.

How does KGS support you in your role?

KGS supports me by providing the expertise, resources and partnership needed to deliver an effective security and loss prevention programme. They ensure I have access to trained security professionals, up-to-date industry knowledge and the latest security technologies to help protect people, assets and operations.

Has there been any significant barriers to progression in your career within the security profession?

One of the most significant barriers I have experienced as a woman in the security sector over the past 22 years has been working in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. Early in my career, I sometimes found that I had to work harder to establish my credibility and demonstrate my expertise, particularly in leadership roles or when making operational decisions.

Rather than allowing this to discourage me, I used it as motivation to continually develop my knowledge, build strong relationships and let my results speak for
themselves. By consistently delivering improvements in safety, security, investigations and loss prevention, I earned the trust and respect of colleagues, stakeholders and leadership teams.

Over the years, I have also seen positive changes within the industry, with greater recognition of the value that diverse perspectives bring to security leadership. I am proud to have contributed to that progress by mentoring others, promoting inclusive leadership and demonstrating that effective security is built on collaboration, professionalism and the ability to solve complex problems, not on gender.

That experience has made me a more resilient leader, strengthened my confidence and reinforced my commitment to creating opportunities for others entering the profession.

How has your previous work experience prepared you for your role in security?

My ten years with the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding Agency provided me with a strong foundation in professional security and shaped the leader I am today. Working in a high-security environment taught me the importance of discipline, integrity, vigilance and following robust security procedures while operating in situations where there was no margin for error.

As a trained dog handler, I developed specialist skills in searching, patrolling, threat detection and incident response. The role required excellent situational awareness, sound decision-making under pressure and the ability to remain calm and focused in challenging environments. It also strengthened my communication skills, as I regularly worked alongside colleagues, military personnel and other emergency services to ensure the safety and security of people, assets and critical infrastructure.

Those ten years gave me a solid grounding in risk assessment, investigations, conflict management and operational planning. The experience also instilled a strong sense of accountability and professionalism that I have carried throughout my 22-year career in security. The principles I learned within the Ministry of Defence continue to influence my approach today, enabling me to lead high-performing teams, manage complex security risks and deliver effective loss prevention strategies in fast-paced commercial environments.

What’s your most memorable moment in your career so far?

One of the most memorable moments of my career was working on an intelligence-led joint investigation with the Metropolitan Police that led to the successful conviction of an organised crime group.

The investigation required close collaboration between multiple agencies, with intelligence carefully gathered, analysed and developed into actionable evidence. It involved maintaining confidentiality, coordinating investigative activity and ensuring that every stage of the process met the required legal and evidential standards.

Seeing the investigation progress from intelligence gathering through to a successful conviction was incredibly rewarding. It demonstrated the value of
effective partnership working, perseverance and attention to detail, while reinforcing the important role that security professionals play in supporting law enforcement and protecting businesses, communities and the public from organised criminal activity.

It remains one of the proudest achievements of my career and strengthened my passion for investigations, intelligence-led security and collaborative working to combat serious and organised crime.

What opportunities do you feel the security profession offers?

The security sector offers significant opportunities for both security professionals and the clients they support.

For security officers, the industry provides a clear pathway for career progression, from frontline roles into specialist positions such as investigations, intelligence, loss prevention, risk management, canine handling and security leadership. Continuous professional development, accredited training and exposure to evolving technologies, including CCTV analytics, AI and data-driven security systems, enable individuals to build rewarding, long-term careers while developing valuable transferable skills.

For clients, the security sector offers far more than physical guarding. Modern security teams are trusted business partners who help reduce risk, prevent loss,
protect people, strengthen resilience and support operational excellence. By using intelligence-led approaches, technology and strong collaboration, security
professionals contribute to safer workplaces, improved compliance, reduced shrinkage and enhanced business continuity.

The greatest opportunity lies in the partnership between security providers and clients. When both work collaboratively, security becomes a proactive function that not only protects people and assets but also adds measurable value to the organisation through improved safety, operational efficiency and informed
decision-making.

What do you do at work on a daily basis?

As Fulfilment Security and Loss Prevention Manager, my role is to protect people, assets and the operation while supporting the site’s overall performance. Every day is different, requiring me to balance strategic planning with operational leadership and problem-solving.

For my site, I oversee all aspects of security and loss prevention, ensuring that security procedures are effective, risks are identified and incidents are investigated thoroughly. I analyse data and trends to identify opportunities to reduce shrinkage, prevent theft and fraud, and improve operational processes. I also manage physical security systems, CCTV, access control and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements, ensuring the site remains secure and resilient.

For my team, I provide leadership, coaching and development to build a high-performing security function. I ensure my team feels supported, equipped and
confident to carry out their responsibilities while maintaining high professional standards. I regularly conduct performance reviews, deliver training, promote
wellbeing and foster a culture of accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement

For my client, I act as a trusted business partner by providing advice on security risks, presenting performance metrics, leading investigations and recommending solutions that improve safety and reduce loss. I work closely with Operations, HR, Health and Safety, IT and external law enforcement agencies to manage incidents, strengthen security and support business objectives. My goal is not only to protect the business but also to add value by improving operational efficiency, reducing risk and creating a safe environment where employees can thrive.

Ultimately, my role is about combining people leadership, intelligence-led investigations, data analysis and strategic risk management to deliver measurable
improvements in safety, security and loss prevention every day.

What advice would you give for someone new starting in the industry?

My advice to someone starting out in the security sector would be to stay curious, remain professional and never stop learning. Security is about much more than protecting buildings or responding to incidents; it is about protecting people, understanding risk, solving problems and building trust.

Take every opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, ask questions and develop your skills. Build a strong foundation by understanding security procedures, legislation, investigations and customer service, as these are all essential to becoming a well-rounded security professional. Be reliable, maintain high standards and always act with integrity. Your reputation is one of your greatest assets in this profession, and people will remember how you conduct yourself, especially in challenging situations.

Do not be afraid to embrace new technology and data-driven approaches. The security industry is constantly evolving, and those who are willing to adapt and
continue developing their knowledge will have the greatest opportunities for career progression.

Finally, believe in yourself. As someone who has spent 22 years in the security sector, including working in a traditionally male-dominated environment, I know that confidence comes with experience. Work hard, be resilient, treat everyone with respect, and let your professionalism and results speak for themselves. Security offers an incredibly rewarding career for those who are committed to making a positive difference.
