Briefly explain your role
As a Security Officer I provide a visible security presence, protecting people, property and assets while responding to incidents and maintaining a safe, secure environment.
What do you love about your job?
I love how no two days are the same in my role. When working on sites, I meet people from various backgrounds and professions. I enjoy meeting new people, creating good working relationships and providing a great service to all. The satisfaction of going home after a day at work knowing I have kept people safe and secure is what makes me happy.
What made you decide to start a career in the security sector?
I decided to start a career in the security sector because I enjoy helping people and maintaining a safe environment. I like working in roles that require responsibility, good communication and staying calm under pressure. The variety of situations and opportunities to develop professionally also make the security industry a rewarding career for me.
How does KGS support you in your role?
KGS supports me by having frequent site visits, yearly reviews and an excellent, supportive Operations Manager for the North. KGS also supports me in my role by providing the most up-to-date learning courses online, which not only refresh my knowledge but also give me a better insight into different areas.
Has there been any significant barriers to progression in your career within the security profession?
No, there have not been any significant barriers to progression in my career, as I feel supported by KGS and my work is always appreciated and acknowledged by my manager.
How has your previous work experience prepared you for your role in security?
I have been in the security industry for 12 years and have worked in many roles, such as corporate security, static security, concierge, retail, events, hospital security and control room operator. These roles have taught me many things and built my confidence over the years. They have helped me get to where I am today and also help the team I work with regularly, as I can share my skills and experience with them to ensure we carry out a great and effective security service.
What’s your most memorable moment in your career so far?
The most memorable moment in my career so far was when I was working alongside my manager in a Mobile Response role, which I really enjoyed. It gave me a great and positive insight into the mobile response role and responsibilities. It was a memorable moment for me as it was great for my progression, and having a great manager alongside me for support and guidance was second to none.
What opportunities do you feel the security profession offers?
The security profession offers many opportunities, such as Security Officer, Mobile Patrol and Response Officer, Security Supervisor, CCTV Operator, Control Room Operator, and Operations or Area Manager. The sky is the limit.
What do you do at work on a daily basis?
On a daily basis, I have the responsibility of unlocking a building worth £33 million. I then ensure staff and customers are able to access the site at the set time every single day. I also provide customer service, complete patrols frequently, ensure staff and all visitors to the site are safe and secure at all times, and control ingress and egress by ensuring everyone is authorised and aware of all site safety procedures. The best thing about it is that I get to meet new people every day and gain more knowledge and experience daily.
What advice would you give for someone new starting in the industry?
The best advice I could give to someone who is new to the industry is: don’t be afraid to try out different roles within security. This has been great for me, as I have gained a wide range of experience and learnt many things over the years by not being afraid to try something new. There are lots of roles the industry has to offer; you just need to try as many opportunities as possible to find out what you enjoy.
